Phrases for Telling Someone to Wait



Step 1: Introduction (Engagement Activity)

🎯 Objective: Introduce the concept of telling someone to wait in a polite and natural way.

🗣 Warm-up Question:

  • "What do you say when someone is rushing you?"
  • "How do you ask someone to wait politely?"

📍 Demonstration:
Act out a situation where a student asks you a question, and you respond using a phrase like:

  • "Hold on a second!"
  • "Just a moment, please."

Step 2: Teach Common Phrases

Basic Phrases (Beginner Level)

  • "Wait a minute."
  • "Just a second."
  • "Hold on."
  • "Give me a moment."

Polite Phrases (Intermediate Level)

  • "Could you wait for a moment, please?"
  • "I'll be right with you."
  • "Bear with me for a moment."
  • "Just a moment, I’ll check."

Formal Phrases (Advanced Level)

🎭 Activity 1: Role Play (Real-life Situations)
👥 Pair up students and give them different scenarios.

  • Situation 1: A student is asking a shopkeeper for information, but the shopkeeper is busy.
  • Situation 2: A person is on a phone call but needs to ask the caller to wait.
  • Situation 3: A teacher is explaining something, and a student interrupts with a question.

Task: Each student must respond using an appropriate waiting phrase.

🎤 Activity 2: "Hold on" Challenge

  • Each student picks a phrase from the list.

🎲 Activity 3: "Guess the Phrase" Game

  • Write the phrases on flashcards.
  • One student picks a card and acts out a scenario where they have to use the phrase.
  • The rest of the class guesses which phrase was used.
