Phrases for Estimating & Guessing



Step 1: Introduce the Concept (Basic Understanding)

🔹 Ask students: What does it mean to estimate or guess?
🔹 Explain: Estimating is making an educated guess about something when you don’t know the exact answer.
🔹 Give examples:

  • "I think it’s about 10 kilometers away." (Guessing a distance)
  • "It should cost around ₹500." (Estimating a price)

Step 2: Common Phrases for Estimating & Guessing

Introduce simple phrases and their meanings with examples:

🔹 General Estimation:

  • "I think it’s around..." → "I think it’s around 8 PM now."
  • "It should be approximately..." → "It should be approximately 20 minutes away."
  • "More or less..." → "The book costs more or less ₹200."
  • "Somewhere in the range of..." → "The population is somewhere in the range of 5,000-10,000 people."

🔹 Guessing Possibilities:

  • "Maybe it’s..." → "Maybe it’s going to rain later."
  • "It could be..." → "It could be a power issue."
  • "I suppose..." → "I suppose she will be here soon."
  • "It seems like..." → "It seems like he is not coming today."

🔹 Making a Rough Calculation:

  • "Let’s say..." → "Let’s say we spend ₹500 each, that’s ₹2,000 in total."
  • "If I had to guess..." → "If I had to guess, I’d say he is about 35 years old."

Step 3: Interactive Activities

🎭 Activity 1: Estimate & Guess Challenge

  1. Write different scenarios on cards (e.g., Guess the price of an object, Estimate the time to travel a distance).
  2. Students pick a card and guess/estimate using appropriate phrases.
  3. The rest of the class agrees/disagrees and provides their estimates.

🗣️ Activity 2: Picture Guessing Game

  1. Show students an image (e.g., a crowded market).
  2. Ask them to estimate and guess things in the image:
    • "How many people are there?"
    • "What is the approximate price of the fruits?"
    • "How far is this place from here?"
  3. They must use phrases like "I think it’s around..." or "It could be..."

🎲 Activity 3: Number Estimation Game

  1. Give students real-world scenarios:
    • "Guess how many students are in this school?"
    • "Estimate the cost of a movie ticket?"
  2. They answer using estimation phrases and discuss their reasoning.

Step 4: Role-Playing Conversations

Assign roles and let students practice dialogues with estimation and guessing:
Example:
A: How much do you think this phone costs?
B: I suppose it’s around ₹20,000.
A: Hmm... I think it’s more or less ₹25,000.


Step 5: Real-Life Application

💡 Homework/Task: Ask students to use these phrases in daily conversations (e.g., estimating travel time, guessing someone’s age, predicting weather).
