Phrases for Being Rich & Poor



Step 1: Introduction (Warm-up) 🎯

Activity: Picture Discussion

  • Show images of a luxurious lifestyle (e.g., mansion, expensive cars) and a modest lifestyle (e.g., small house, simple food).
  • Ask:
    • What do you see in the pictures?
    • How would you describe the lifestyle?
    • Do you know any phrases to describe wealth or poverty?

💰 Phrases for Being Rich:

  1. Rolling in money
  2. Living in luxury
  3. Well-off / Well-to-do

  8. Raking in the cash
  9. Born with a silver spoon
  10. A millionaire’s lifestyle

Interactive Activity:
🧩 Match the Meaning – Provide sentences, and students match them with the right phrase.


🏚 Phrases for Being Poor:

  1. Hard up
  2. Down and out
  3. Living hand to mouth
  4. Broke / Penniless
  5. Struggling to make ends meet
  6. In debt up to one’s ears
  7. Not a penny to his name
  8. Dirt poor
  9. A shoestring budget
  10. Barely scraping by

Interactive Activity:
🎭 Role Play – Give students different life situations where they act as rich or poor people in a conversation.


Step 3: Speaking Practice 🗣

  • Dialogue Completion: Give incomplete dialogues with missing words/phrases related to being rich or poor.
  • Debate Activity: "Is money the key to happiness?" – Let students express opinions using learned phrases.
  • Storytelling: Ask students to create a short story using at least 3 phrases from each category.

  • True or False: Show sentences and ask if they are correctly used.
