Phrases for Cold Weather



Step 1: Warm-up (Engage the Learners)

🗣 Activity: Picture Discussion

  • Show pictures of winter, snow, people shivering, and wearing warm clothes.
  • Ask: "How does this weather feel?" "What do you wear in this weather?"

🎭 Miming Game

  • Act out shivering, rubbing hands, or wrapping a scarf.
  • Ask students to guess: "What season is this?"

Step 2: Introduce Cold Weather Phrases

📌 Basic Phrases:

  1. It’s freezing outside!
  2. I’m shivering!
  3. I need a warm jacket.
  4. It’s chilly today.
  5. The temperature has dropped.
  6. I can see my breath in the air.

📌 Slightly Advanced Phrases:

  1. It’s bitterly cold.
  2. I’m frozen to the bone.
  3. Bundle up, it’s cold out there!
  4. The roads are icy.
  5. I love snuggling up in a warm blanket.

🎤 Call & Response (Repetition Practice)

  • Teacher: It’s freezing outside!
  • Students: It’s freezing outside!
    (Continue with other phrases)

Step 3: Interactive Practice

🎭 Role Play – “A Cold Day”

  • Assign roles:
    1. One student is stepping outside and feels cold.
    2. Another suggests wearing a coat or drinking hot tea.
    • Example:
      • Student A: Brrr! It’s freezing outside!
      • Student B: You should wear a warm jacket!

👀 Matching Game

  • Give students phrases and pictures (snow, warm clothes, hot drinks, etc.)
  • Ask them to match the correct phrase with the picture.

🎲 Sentence Completion Game

  • Teacher: It’s so cold today that I need a ____.
  • Students: Jacket / Scarf / Hot Chocolate

Step 4: Application (Creative Usage)

📝 Story Building

  • Start a sentence: One cold morning, I stepped outside and…
  • Each student adds a sentence using cold-weather phrases.

🎤 Mini Presentations

  • Students describe their favorite winter activity using the new phrases.

Step 5: Wrap-up & Review

❄️ Quick Fire Quiz

  • Ask: "How would you describe a snowy day?"
  • Students answer using phrases learned.

🎭 Freeze & Act Out

  • One student says a cold-weather phrase, others act it out.

Recap & Homework

  • Ask students to use at least 3 phrases in a short paragraph.
  • Bonus: Watch a winter scene in a movie and write down phrases they hear!
