Phrases for Hot Weather



Step 1: Introduction (Engage the Students)

🎤 Warm-up Activity:

  • Ask: "How do you feel on a hot summer day?"
  • Show pictures of sunny, hot weather and ask students to describe them.
  • Introduce some basic phrases:
    • "It’s boiling hot!"
    • "The sun is blazing!"
    • "I’m sweating like crazy!"

Step 2: Teach Key Phrases with Actions

🗣️ Say & Act Out (TPR - Total Physical Response)

  • "It’s scorching!" (Fan yourself with your hand)
  • "I need a cold drink!" (Pretend to drink water)
  • "The heat is unbearable!" (Wipe imaginary sweat)

🔹 Pair Activity:

  • One student says a phrase, and the other acts it out.
  • Example: Student A says "The sun is beating down!" → Student B pretends to cover their eyes from the sun.

Step 3: Role Play (Real-life Interaction)

  • Scenario 1: Two friends talking about the hot weather.
  • Scenario 2: Ordering a cold drink at a café.
  • Scenario 3: Complaining about heat in a park.

Example Dialogue:
🧑‍🦱: "Wow! It’s burning up today!"
👩‍🦰: "Yeah! I feel like I’m melting!"
🧑‍🦱: "Let’s grab a cold lemonade!"


Step 4: Fun Games (Reinforcement & Speaking Practice)

🎭 Hot Seat:

  • One student sits in the "Hot Seat" and describes how they feel in hot weather.
  • Others guess the phrase!

🎲 Weather Bingo:

  • Give students a Bingo card with different hot weather phrases.
  • Call out descriptions, and students mark the correct phrase.

Step 5: Wrap-Up & Reflection

📝 Exit Ticket:

  • Ask students to write or say one new phrase they learned today.
  • Discuss: "What do you do to stay cool in hot weather?"
